Permits to work
High risk work gets a permit: requested by the crew, checked against the prerequisites, approved by the people who are allowed to approve it, and closed out when the job is finished.
What it does
A permit type for each kind of work
A permit type carries its own request form, its conditions and the approvals it needs, so hot work, confined space entry, working at heights or excavation each ask the right questions. Hot work and working at heights come ready to use.
Only people who are qualified
A permit type can require that the crew named on it hold current training or tickets. If someone does not, the permit says exactly which prerequisite is unmet and who it applies to, rather than refusing without explanation.
Approved in order, by different people
Approvals run in the stages you define, one after another or several at once, each one held by a role rather than a named individual. The issuer approves the permit and the person doing the work accepts it, so one person cannot do both halves.
Isolations and gas tests recorded properly
Each isolation point is tracked from planned to isolated to verified to released, with every verification kept and printable tags for the field. Gas test readings are recorded against the permit with the time they were taken.
A window, an extension and an expiry
The crew asks for the window they need and the issuer adopts it in one action. A permit can be suspended and resumed when conditions change, extended when it is approved, and expires on its own when its time is up.
Who is on the permit right now
People sign on and sign off against the permit, one record per visit, so presence is worked out from what people actually did rather than from a clipboard. Contractors do it from their own portal.
Work that clashes with other work
When a permit overlaps with other work in the same area, the clash is shown to the issuer. A serious clash has to be signed off before the permit can be issued, and the sign off is kept with the permit.
A live board of what is open
One board shows every permit in play and updates as things change, so a supervisor, a control room or a gate can see what is authorised right now without refreshing a report.
How it fits with the rest
A permit draws on the rest of the platform rather than duplicating it. The crew are people and contractor workers already on file, so their training, tickets and inductions are the ones the prerequisite check reads. The plant being isolated is in the equipment register. The chemicals involved carry their own safety data sheets. The location is the same location every other record uses.
What happens on the permit flows outward too. Conditions that are not met raise actions. A permit that goes wrong becomes an incident with the permit attached. Sign on and sign off feed who is on the premises, which matters most when the muster alarm sounds. And the completed permit, with its approvals, isolations and tests, is the evidence pack for the audit six months later.
